Headed to the Wine Extravaganza for a day of wine tasting? Whether you’re a “wino” or a novice, here are some quick tips to make your trip a success!
Whether you’re a Pinot pro or a red-blend rookie, the Wine Extravaganza has something for everyone.
The annual wine tasting event, now in its sixth year, has over 65 wines from the top Northwest wineries, with many award-winning bottles available to try. It’s an event I never want to miss, and once you get your first taste, this festival will be a yearly tradition for you, too.
The event runs from 3 to 7 p.m. April 22, starting at The Resort Plaza Shops in downtown Coeur d’Alene. Tickets include a signature wine glass and six wine tasting samples, but don’t worry — additional wine tasting samples are available for purchase. It’s the one place to sample all the classics and try something new.
I may be an amateur wino, but I pride myself on knowing the best way to tackle a wine tasting. Here are the top five tips for making the Wine Extravaganza — and any wine tasting! — a success:
1) Don’t ignore anything
I’m a white wine girl all the way, but during a wine tasting, I make a point to try anything and everything. It’s rare that you get a chance to sample so many award-winning wines in one place, so take advantage of it. Take a sip of a sweet bubbly and then opt for a dry red. You never know when you’ll find your new favorite!
2) Make a day of it
While you’re downtown, take the chance to stretch your legs and explore. Grab lunch before the event and plan a stroll around the boardwalk between stops to take in the view. Even better, make a weekend of it! The Coeur d’Alene Resort has activities throughout the whole weekend, including a Wine Extravaganza Lake Cruise on Friday night, Sunday brunch at The Resort’s Dockside Restaurant featuring sparkling wines from Treveri Cellars and accommodation packages for the weekend. It’s the perfect romantic get-away or girls’ weekend.
3) Gather the gang
My mom and I love to go to the Wine Extravaganza together whenever we can! It’s a great chance to bond, talk about what’s going on in our lives and sip some delicious wines. So grab your group — whether that’s a significant other, gaggle of girlfriends or your office buddies — and head downtown Coeur d’Alene for an event that I can guarantee will turn into an annual tradition.
4) Take it all in
Don’t worry, I’m not expecting you to turn into a wine expert overnight. But do take a moment to savor and enjoy each wine you taste. There will be a lot of them, so pay attention to the wines you like — are you more of a full-bodied red drinker, or does a light white wine really get your taste buds tingling? It doesn’t matter if you’re a seasoned “wino” or if this is your first time tasting different wines. Talk about the flavors and style you like and what you taste — and make note of what bottle to buy for your next special occasion!
5) Don’t just concentrate on the wine
I know — have I lost my mind? But seriously, take this opportunity to wander into the shops you may not have been in before. There’s a lot to take in! From outdoor clothing companies to magical toy stores, there’s something for everyone. This event is a great chance to explore new areas. Last time I went to the Wine Extravaganza, I found a new coffee shop that is now my go-to for all things caffeinated.
