As flora burgeons with vital urgency, and patient timelessness, and our own eagerness to live as only one can in warmth and sun matches, or outpaces, the blooming world around us–it is a particular blessing and great fortune for those of us who inhabit this pristine region of our country. A handful of counties in this nation are as gloriously lovely as ours, and none more so. It is not difficult for any to understand that this season is universally fitting for an occasion celebrating the sumptuousness of food and the opulence of wine: the first annual Coeur d’Alene Food & Wine Festival. Neither is it surprising to locals and visitors alike that Coeur d’Alene is an ideal place to host such an affair. The Missoula floods ravaged, then shaped, this place several millennia ago; when they subsided, they left a newly carved and reinvigorated paradise, an untouched world that bore no residents, but immediately welcomed new ones. People and flora and fauna, even mega-fauna, timidly but irresistibly returned. This place was formed; and people still come, for those most primal and instinctive reasons: it’s peaceful and comely here, it’s home. Celebrate this season and this locale with us. The sustenance of body and the nourishment of soul–in the form of food and wine, lay the foundation for this celebration. They are worthy of celebration in their own right, but for our purposes form a nucleus of family, friends and life. As we grow, and hopefully not too much or too fast, this area is fast becoming known as a center of culture, cuisine and lifestyle. We would be remiss not to host celebrations of this kind, and like the first still damp earth, after those floods so long ago, welcomed back the progenitors of their kind once more, we welcome all to join us in perennial, continual, and cyclical life itself. Why would we not celebrate?
