Beyond Blooms: The Secret Life of Bees at The Coeur d’Alene Resort

Posted on: January 25, 2024

In the heart of Coeur d'Alene, The Coeur d'Alene Resort is creating quite a buzz as it enters its third year of housing rooftop Honey Bees. The highlight of this initiative is the thriving community of over 200,000 Carnolian Honey Bees, which contribute significantly to The Resort's sustainability efforts. These industrious insects work diligently, producing an impressive average of 19.5 gallons of raw organic honey each season. The sweet nectar from these bees finds its way into the resort's culinary creations, enhancing dishes like the "Sweet As Can Bee" Gooey Dessert at Dockside, the Catering Honey Wall Grazing Board, and the refreshing Bees Knees Cocktail served up at Beverly's.

Beyond their honey-producing talents, these bee friends play a crucial role in The Resort's flourishing flora. The Resort's commitment to environmental stewardship is evident in the annual planting of 30,000 Tango Red Geraniums on the property. Since introducing the Honey Bees, The Resort has witnessed remarkable flowering seasons, with vibrant and healthy blooms lasting well into October. The synergistic relationship between the bees and the flowers has not only enriched The Resort's surroundings but also contributed to a more sustainable and eco-friendly environment.

The Coeur d'Alene Resort takes pride in incorporating Bee awareness into its events and marketing strategies, providing guests with insights into how the hives work. One standout event from 2023 was the Spa Live Well "Honey & Hydrotherapy Retreat. Guests were treated to a live beekeeping tour, a sunrise hike, and indulged in spa services incorporating honey, including honey oils and scrubs. To further engage and educate, the resort distributes Resort Honey Bee Fun Facts to guests and invites groups like ALHI to participate in honey tasting and informative presentations. This commitment to both environmental sustainability and guest education sets The Coeur d'Alene Resort apart as a destination that harmoniously blends luxury with eco-conscious practices.
